Reading Kangaroo, Wombat and Koala Signs
Field notes on telling grey kangaroos from wallabies, reading wombat burrows and koala scratches, and naming the calls of kookaburras, rosellas and black

A grey kangaroo is taller and heavier through the shoulders, carries its head high and moves in long, deliberate hops, while a wallaby is smaller, rounder in the back and often slips away in a low, hurried bound. On a trail the surest distinction is posture and pace rather than colour, since both animals are grey-brown in poor light. Size, shoulder shape and the way each animal holds its forepaws settle the question faster than any field mark.
How can I tell a grey kangaroo from a wallaby on a trail?
Eastern grey kangaroos stand roughly 1.5 to 1.8 metres when upright and can weigh 50 kilograms or more. Red-necked and swamp wallabies on the South Coast are usually under a metre at the shoulder and rarely exceed 20 kilograms. The grey kangaroo has a small head with large ears set wide apart, a long muzzle and forearms that hang loosely when it grazes. Wallabies carry a shorter muzzle, ears closer together and a hunched profile, with the hindquarters noticeably higher than the chest.
Movement is the second clue. A disturbed grey kangaroo accelerates into a series of long, flat hops, using the tail as a counterbalance and covering ground quickly. A wallaby tends to break cover in a fast, low bound, dodging into scrub within a few metres. If the animal freezes and watches, look at the tail: a grey kangaroo's tail is thick at the base and trails heavily, while a wallaby's is slimmer and often held closer to the ground.
Habitat separates them further. Grey kangaroos prefer open grassland, forest edges and golf-course fairways, where they can see approaching danger. Wallabies favour dense understorey, creek lines and bracken, and are more often seen alone or in pairs. A mob of large animals grazing in the open at dusk is almost always grey kangaroos. A single animal slipping along a shaded gully is more likely a wallaby.
Tracks help when the animals are gone. A kangaroo's hind foot leaves a long, narrow print with a clearly defined central toe pad, and the tail may leave a faint drag line between the prints. Wallaby prints are shorter and neater, with less tail drag. Scats differ too: grey kangaroo droppings are usually blunt, cylindrical and roughly 2 centimetres long, while wallaby scats are smaller, more angular and often deposited in loose piles on logs or raised ground.

How do I recognise wombat burrows, droppings and koala signs?
A bare-nosed wombat burrow is a conspicuous tunnel, usually 30 to 50 centimetres wide and often taller than it is broad, cut into a bank, a creek edge or the base of a tree. The entrance is frequently worn smooth at the lip, with fresh soil scattered in a fan outside and scratch marks from the animal's powerful foreclaws. Wombats often maintain several burrows within a home range, and a single entrance may be used for years. Look for a well-trodden pad leading in, and for flies or a faint musky smell around the mouth of the tunnel.
Wombat droppings are distinctive: roughly cubic, about 2 centimetres across, dark brown when fresh and paler when dry. They are usually deposited on logs, rocks or flat ground near the burrow, often in small clusters. Because the animals mark territory with scent, a latrine site may be reused repeatedly. Fresh droppings are glossy; older ones crumble at a touch.
Koala signs are subtler. The animals themselves sit high in the forks of eucalypts, often motionless for hours, so the first evidence is usually a scratch mark on a trunk. Koala claws leave two parallel gouges, roughly 1 to 2 centimetres apart, running vertically up smooth-barked trees such as grey gums and manna gums. Scats are small, firm and oval, about 1.5 centimetres long, often found in a scatter at the base of a favoured tree. A strong smell of eucalyptus and ammonia near a trunk is another indicator.
Listen as well. A male koala produces a low, grating bellow, sometimes described as a snore crossed with a saw, which carries through the bush at night. During the day, a sharp, repeated grunt or a soft wail may reveal an animal that is otherwise hidden. If a koala is feeding, look for stripped branches and a scatter of chewed leaves beneath the canopy.
Which calls and colours identify kookaburras, rosellas and black cockatoos?
The laughing kookaburra is the largest kingfisher in the region and announces itself with a cackling chorus that rises and falls, often at dawn and dusk. The bird is stocky, pale below and brown above, with a heavy head, a stout dark bill and a faint blue patch on the wing. It hunts from a low perch, dropping onto insects, lizards and small snakes. A single bird may give a short, sharp chuckle; a family group answers in a rolling laugh that carries several hundred metres.
Rosellas are smaller, brightly coloured parrots with a distinctive white cheek patch. The eastern rosella has a red head and breast, yellow-green back, blue shoulders and a pale bill. The crimson rosella is deep red with blue cheeks, wings and tail. Both fly with a fast, undulating motion and call in a sharp, three-note whistle, often rendered as "chink-chink-chink". They feed on seeds, fruit and blossoms, and are common in gardens, orchards and along roadsides.
The yellow-tailed black cockatoo is a large, slow-flying bird, dark brown to black with a pale yellow cheek patch and a yellow band in the tail. Its call is a drawn-out, mournful wail, sometimes described as a squealing cry, and it is often heard before the bird is seen. Flocks move through the canopy feeding on seeds of banksias, hakeas and pine cones, and their habit of tearing branches leaves a litter of chewed cones below. The glossy black cockatoo is smaller and quieter, with a red or orange tail band in the male and a smaller, softer call.
What should a walker carry to confirm an identification?
A small notebook, a torch for burrow entrances and a phone with a bird-call app are enough for most coastal walks. Binoculars help with canopy birds, and a ruler or a coin in the pocket gives a quick scale for tracks and scats. Photographs of footprints beside a known object, such as a boot or a coin, are more useful than close-ups without scale.
Record the time, the weather and the habitat as well as the animal. A grey kangaroo seen at midday in open grass is a different observation from a wallaby at dusk in dense scrub, and the notes will make sense months later. If a call is unfamiliar, record it rather than trying to describe it; the rhythm and pitch are easier to match against a reference than a written impression.
When should a walker keep a distance?
All native wildlife in New South Wales is protected, and a walker's first duty is to leave the animal undisturbed. Keep at least 20 metres from kangaroos and wallabies, and further from any animal with a joey. Never approach a wombat burrow closely enough to block the entrance, and do not handle koalas, which can scratch and bite when stressed. If an animal appears injured, note the location and call the local wildlife rescue service rather than attempting a capture.
Dogs must be kept on a lead and away from burrows and feeding areas. Food should not be offered to any wild animal, since it changes behaviour and can cause illness. On the South Coast, the same rules apply in national parks, council reserves and private land, and permits are required for any rehabilitation work. A quiet walker who watches from a distance will see more than one who moves quickly, and the signs described here will be easier to read on the next visit.
